What's Hot on Broadway: Finding Neverland

Finding Neverland

If you’ve ever wondered how the timeless story of Peter Pan came to be, then you’ll definitely love Finding Neverland. Based on the Academy Award®-winning film of the same name, this breathtaking show follows playwright J.M. Barrie as he summons the courage to become the writer – and the man – he yearns to be. Following the dismal reception of his latest play, Little Mary, Barrie meets the widowed Sylvia Llewelyn Davies and her four young sons in Kensington Gardens, and a strong friendship develops between them. Delighted by the boys’ hilarious escapades, Barrie finds the inspiration he’s been missing as he conjures the magical world of Neverland and writes a play unlike any the high-society London theatergoers have ever seen. It’s a tremendous risk, but as Barrie himself has discovered, when you believe, you can fly.

In February of 2011, La Jolla Playhouse of California produced a new stage musical based on the award-winning film with the book by Allan Knee, score by Scott Frankel and Michael Korie, and directed and choreographed by Rob Ashford. The adaptation had its world premiere on September 22, 2012 at Curve in Leicester, England. A revised version of the musical opened at the American Repertory Theater (ART) in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2014 with a new creative team, a new book and 22 new songs, with a few songs from the original composers. The ART production starred Brian d’Arcy James as Barrie and Jason Alexander as the "nagging theater producer," and ran at the ART from July 23, 2014 to September 28, 2014. As of March 2015, the ART production directed by Diane Paulus has moved to Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre with Matthew Morrison portraying J. M. Barrie and Kelsey Grammer starring as Charles Frohman. Previews began on March 15, with the official opening scheduled for April 15. So if you’re in the New York area this spring, be sure to get your tickets to see Finding Neverland!
