VA health care facilities use the creative arts as one form of rehabilitative treatment. Veterans enrolled at VA facilities compete in local and national creative arts competitions annually. The competition divisions include 50 categories in the visual arts division, 15 writing categories and over 100 categories in the performing arts of music, dance and drama.
The Art & Writing Exhibition showcases the gold medal-winning artwork and creative writing entries from the national competition. A live Stage Show is performed by Veterans who also achieved gold medal-winning status in a variety of categories from the performing arts divisions.

The Department of Veterans Affairs and the American Legion Auxiliary are co-presenters of the National Veterans Creative Arts Competition and Festival. The Battle Creek VA Medical Center is the host VA for the 2019 event.
