Desmond Tutu Returns to Kalamazoo July 24

Kalamazoo, Mich.—Desmond Tutu, recipient of the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize, will share his thoughts on compassion and community 7 p.m. Thursday, July 24, 2008 at Miller Auditorium on the campus of Western Michigan University. Doors open at 6:15 p.m.
This free, public event sponsored by the Fetzer Institute is appropriate for all ages, especially high school and beyond. Summer hours for the Miller Auditorium Ticket Office are Monday through Friday, 11 a.m.—3 p.m. Individuals are limited to no more than six tickets, and groups are limited to no more than 30.
Desmond Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 in recognition of his courage and heroism as a unifying leader in the campaign to resolve apartheid in South Africa.
Tutu retired as Archbishop of Cape Town in 1996 and then served as chairman of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The mandate of the commission, headed by President Nelson Mandela, was to bear witness to, record, and in some cases grant amnesty to the perpetrators of crimes relating to human rights violations, reparation and rehabilitation.
This event continues the conversation that Fetzer Institute President and CEO Tom Beech began last summer in a similar public event with Archbishop Tutu. Beech noted, “Desmond Tutu personifies compassion and forgiveness, and the Institute is pleased to be able to bring him once again to the Kalamazoo community.”
The Fetzer Institute’s mission, to foster awareness of the power of love and forgiveness in the emerging global community, rests on its conviction that efforts to address the critical issues facing the world must go beyond political, social and economic strategies to their psychological and spiritual roots. The Institute works with global leaders, organizations and individuals to bring the power of love and forgiveness to the center of individual, community and organizational life.
